Coushatta Casino Resort was founded in 1995 by the Coushatta Indian Tribe in Louisiana. Since that time the casino flourished and has been successful. Recently the Coushatta Casino Resort earned the title of Best Local Casino.

The Coushatta Casino Resort offers 100,000 square feet for the gaming floor. There are three different hotels for guests. They are The Grand Hotel, Seven Clans Hotel, and Coushatta Inn. A resort dedicated for RV camping. There is also a very large golf course and other options for entertainment and recreation.

Nearly 3,000 people are employed by the Coushatta Casino Resort. The surrounding area benefits from the resort through tourism and businesses that offer support services to the casino resort.

The casino has helped pay for major changes to the area. This includes improvements made to utilities. This helped benefit the lives of tribal members and the surrounding community. The casino resort has also made it possible for the tribe to offer better opportunities for education.

In 1973 the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana received federal recognition. In 1995 the resort first opened. Since that time, they have strived to bring new updates and renovate as often as possible.

The Coushatta Casino Resort has aimed to treat their employees well and satisfied with their workplace. For the guests the casino has strived to provide year round entertainment, concerts, and festivals. The golf course is open to the public for anyone that wants to play. These are some of the reasons why the Coushatta Casino Resort was awarded the title Best Local Casino for 2018.

The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is one of three federally recognized tribes of Koasati people. They are is located in Allen and Jefferson Davis Parishes, Louisiana. The tribe hosts an annual pow wow during the second weekend in June.^[3]

Reservation[edit]

The Coushatta Indian Reservation is located on 154-acres in Allen Parish, Louisiana. Approximately 400 people lived on the reservation in the 1990s.^[2] The reservation has a tribal police department, fire department, and court house. There is also a tribal medical facility, fitness center, and event center.

Language[edit]

The Koasati language is part of the Apalachee-Alabama-Koasati branch of the Muskogean languages. An estimated 200 people spoke the language in 2000, most of whom lived in Louisiana. The Coushatta tribe is the only Indian tribe in Louisiana that has retained their historical Indian language. The language is written in the Latin script.^[4] Historically, the language was spoken exclusively among tribal members and was never written down. ^[5] In 2007, along with McNeese State University, the tribe received a NSF documenting endangered language (DEL) grant that provided necessary resources to document and preserve the Koasati language. ^[6]

Government[edit]

The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is headquartered in Elton, Louisiana. The tribe is a sovereign nation and is governed by a democratically elected five-member council. The current administration is as follows:

International Relations[edit]

On November 17th, 2008, the Sovereign Nation of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana became the first Native American tribe to recognize, honor and welcome official representatives of the State of Israel. ^[8]

Economic development[edit]

The tribe owns and operates the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, Louisiana. The casino is home to the Koasati Pines golf course. The casino operates 8 restaurants and 4 hotels, and is the largest casino in the state. The casino employs over 3000 local residents, and it is the largest private employer in Southwest Louisiana and 2nd largest in the state. ^[9] The tribe also owns a Christmas tree farm,^[2], and operates a large crawfish farm in Kinder. ^[10]
